If it can help anyone : this is an extract from Ken Burn's TV series "Jazz", part 2 – The Gift.
Who could tell me the name of the band who plays "la marseillaise" in this video. We hear it at 1'18. Thank you in advance
This music was recorded long before the records credited as the first jazz records ,but i call Mr. Europe's music jazz . This was the african-american take on music that really started our ( european) love of their art even well over a century ago.
This is my Grand dad. Sadly he was taken from us before I was born. It is so awesome that he is finally getting this modern day recognition.
The info' contained here ought to be on the (USA) national education curriculum – and Europe's too I guess. It's a little-known lesson to us all in the 21st C just what contributions and sacrifices African Americans made in WW1. I've learned a lot from this video, thanks for posting.
Look for the 369th Experience to be a vital part of America's celebration of the Centennial of it's entry into World War 1. It's about time the Harlem Hell Fighters get their full recognition. Will Smith's company has purchased the film rights to Max Brooks' graphic novel on the Hell Fighters. Let's hope the movie is a better representation than a graphic novel.
Jazz may be American music, but it is African American Music" -James Reese Europe One of the best quotes ever.
CHUCK A. WRIGHT II its about time! I have been following this on and off since 1980, I share the same appeal Max brooks has in this topic and I hope he tells it right! In particular I take interest in Jim Europe. the movie will show why. Also I personally would nominate Wynton .Marsalis only to do the music score. His genius is aware of WC HANDY,EUBIE BLAKE,SIDNEY BECHET and such royal garden musicians
