Whilst this is a fair point, there is no way of telling from appearances that this computer isn't voice activated (as opposed to your steam train analogy) and I think, as darkjediMIK says, he is an engineer not a historian. The best analogy I cant think of is that if I were to go back in time 20 years and sit in front of my dad's old 286 and the screen was blank I might wiggle the mouse or tap the keyboard to wake it up. Believe me, that computer didn't have a sleep mode.
